Propane Safety
All fuels, including propane, have unique qualities to safely operate.
Propane Tank Location
Altogas follows propane industry safety standards throughout their service including setting a propane tank. Propane tanks require a minimum 10 feet from your home and property line. Altogas sets a variety of propane tanks including: 250 gallon, 500 gallon and 1,000 gallon.
For safe propane delivery service, you propane tank should sit within 80 feet from your driveway. The Altogas delivery crew do carry/use a 100 foot hose to fill the tank, but reserve this for getting around obstacles like cars and snow banks.
Propane is a Safe Fuel. Know and Follow the Safety Guidelines
At Altogas, we’re committed to ensuring your propane supply is dependable by offering both professional tank monitoring services and the flexibility for you to monitor your own gauge. To keep your system running smoothly, your propane setup features safety regulators that help maintain reliable operation. It’s essential to never let your tank run completely empty, as this creates a serious fire risk. If you ever expect to run low on propane, please contact Altogas right away to arrange a timely delivery —be sure to let us know about your situation. Should your tank become empty, a certified technician will need to perform a safety inspection before you can resume using your propane service. Your safety and peace of mind remain our top priorities.
Tank Gauge Reading
Your propane tank gauge reading shows how much propane is currently in your tank. Altogas fills tanks to 80%, following industry standard as propane requires room to expand safely inside the tank.
To estimate how many gallons of propane you have left, multiply your gauge percentage (actual reading) by your tank size.
For instance, if your gauge reads 35%:
If You Suspect a Propane Gas Leak
A propane gas leak is an emergency. It can result in fire and explosion. Be prepared to respond.
1. GET AWAY IMMEDIATELY
Get everyone out of the building or area where you suspect a gas leak
2. AVOID CREATING SPARKS
As you leave, avoid igniting the leaking gas. Some electrical devices and appliances can create sparks when manipulated.
- DO NOT turn any light switches on or off.
- Do not interact with any appliances, outlets, or landline phones.
- No smoking, vaping, or open flames.
3. STAY AWAY AND REPORT THE LEAK
Once safely out of the home/building, call Altogas, 911, or the fire department. Stay away until Altogas, emergency responders, or qualified professional confirms that it is safe to return.
TURN OFF GAS at the TANK(S) – unless there’s a leak at the tank itself.
To CLOSE the VALVE, TURN IT to the RIGHT – or Clockwise.
BEFORE USING ANY PROPANE APPLIANCES AGAIN,
your entire propane system must be safety checked by Altogas, according to propane industry standards.
